French cuisine is one of the best in the entire world and France is known for its amazing food. However, the French recipes are pretty complicated and to be able to cook a traditional French dish would require a lot of knowledge and practice. The French like their food slowly cooked and well plated. Numerous famous dishes in France take over 3 to 4 hours to get the perfect flavor. However, there is one recipe from France that is tasty but easy to make. It is known as Ratatouille.
The French people love their vegetables, and this is one dish that has lots and lots of vegetables mixed with some herbs and seasoning. This recipe got so famous that Disney Pixar made it the title of their movie. If you have seen the movie, you would have noticed the little chef Remy cooking this very dish to impress the food critic. The dish, however, is not at all complicated to make. The dish originated from Nice, and it involves all the vegetable that is in season.
One eggplant- cut the eggplant into 1-inch cubes or slices without peeling the skin off.
Three medium-sized zucchini- Slice or cut the zucchini into 1-inch cubes.
2-3 medium-sized onions- sliced or diced into I inch cubes.
2-3 green bell pepper- Seed the bell pepper and chop or cut it into cubes of 1 inch
4-5 Tomatoes- Sliced or peeled and seeded or cut into cubes.
½ cup extra-virgin olive oil
5-6 garlic cloves- finely chopped and crushed.
½ cup water
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
two teaspoon salt
Note- you can also use other vegetables in making ratatouille. The traditional recipe says that all the seasonal vegetables can be used in the preparation. Additionally cut all the vegetables in one shape only. If you prefer cubes, then cut all the vegetables into cubes. If you prefer slices, then slice all the vegetables. This will make the dish look good.
French sauteed eggplant
Here are the steps you need to follow to make a good Ratatouille:
Take a skillet and pour ¼ cups of olive oil in it. Let the oil heat up. If you want, you can also use two skillets to speed up the process.
Once the oil is heated, start sautéing each vegetable separately. Start with the eggplant and cook it for about 8 minutes. You can sauté two vegetables simultaneously in two skillets.
Take the cooked eggplant and transfer it to a casserole.
Now do the same with the zucchini and transfer them to the casserole.
Now the oil in your pan might have dried so add a little more oil to the pan and add onions and bell pepper together. Do this for 6 minutes and transfer than to the casserole.
Now add garlic, tomato, salt, and water to the casserole and let it boil over medium heat.
Now reduce the heat and let the vegetables cook for an hour.
After one hour, remove the cover and cook it for another 20 minutes at medium flame.
Let it rest for half an hour and then serve the ratatouille.
You can see that the recipes are not very difficult to cook. Moreover, it is extremely healthy. The best thing about ratatouille is that it can be eaten at any time with anything to satisfy the hunger. It is served as the main course, a side dish and can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
